The new West Ham Bus Depot has been built for the East London Bus Group to help meet the increased demand for public transport throughout the London 2012 Olympic Games. To counteract the environmental impact of the increased traffic, the new depot has been designed by Pringle Richards Sharrat Architects to include a number of sustainable elements including an attractive Kalzip Nature Roof. After first designing and installing the striking four-barrel Kalzip aluminium roof structure, Lakesmere worked closely with approved subcontractor Blackdown Horticultural Consultants to install the nature roof to two of the vaults. The system was careful designed to maximise the existing environmental credentials of Kalzip aluminium and to meet the client’s additional requirements of reducing both sound and airbourne pollution levels.

The structural decking sheets, which were up to 15m in length, required them to be brought in via phased deliveries with each sheet then being hoisted individually into place using a pedestrian operated tower crane, which had been restricted in height because of the existing overhead power lines. The Kalzip roof sheets were in excess of 34 metres long and so had to rolled and curved on site. This was again carried out as a phased operation due to storage restrictions on site.
