Lakesmere was appointed to complete a complex cladding package for the University of Strathclyde, where a centre of excellence has been created with the construction of a new institute building for the faculty of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences.

To emphasise the University’s expertise in the field of medicine, the striking wall cladding has been designed by architects Sheppard Robson to represent a DNA strand. The attractive cladding package features a polychromatic palette of eight shades of grey installed over three floors to all elevations and accented by a floating boarder of ‘lipstick red’ aluminium soffit. The ‘random’ pattern of the aluminium rainscreen required meticulous attention to detail throughout the installation stage to ensure that each panel was positioned exactly according to the architect’s vision.

With site access at the University of Strathclyde being particularly limited owing to the project’s city centre location, Lakesmere devised an effective schedule of works that involved close coordination with other trades on site. Additionally, a programme of ‘just in time’ product deliveries was scheduled so that the small amount of site storage space was maximised. Working alongside main contractor BAM Construction, Lakesmere’s problem-solving capabilities were vital to the project’s successful delivery.
