The Lakesmere Group was appointed by main contractor John Sisk & Son to deliver a complex roofing and cladding package for Project Dove, a major new production plant for food and beverage company Nestlé.

A key feature of the new development, which comprises multiple buildings, is the striking gold and red façade. This has been achieved through the installation of horizontally laid Trimo composite cladding panels which have been overlaid with James & Taylor expanded mesh cladding, specified in an anodised gold finish. The mesh has been installed using an ‘invisible’ fixing system so that it appears to float around the top areas of the buildings, some of which are up to 30 metres high.

To further complement the gold mesh design, and to reflect the style of the Nestle’s branding, the lower level building feature Trimo composite cladding panels and flashings in a dramatic red colour. Lakesmere was also appointed to deliver the project’s multiple roof packages using Trimo composite roofing panels specified in a Patina Green colour.

As well as creating an attractive design feature, a key consideration in Lakesmere’s specification of the Trimo cladding panels was the product’s exceptional spanning capability. With some panels spanning up to eight metres in length, there was a reduction in the use of steelwork which brought significant cost benefits to the project.

One of the major challenges faced by the Lakesmere team was the project’s construction programme as a large proportion of the external works and the internal fit-out of the manufacturing plant were carried out simultaneously. Lakesmere worked closely with main contractor Sisk and the client Nestlé to coordinate activity but as work to get the manufacturing plant operational took precedence, the build sequence of Lakesmere’s packages was subject to change and modification throughout.

The Project Dove scheme holds the title of being Nestlé’s largest construction project worldwide and will consolidate all the company’s UK coffee production under one roof.
