Lakesmere was appointed to design and install the attractive building envelope package for the University of Glasgow’s new Translational Research Centre. Constructed as part the University of Glasgow’s next phase of pioneering research into the fight against cancer, the new Translational Research Centre has been designed by RMJM Architects with Lakesmere working alongside main contractor Mansell.

A key feature of this project is the patterned aluminium cladding that has been installed to the west, south, and overhanging east facades of the building and which was successfully created using a very complex and challenging two-tone anodising process.

Local artist Kate Davies created a 2-dimensional piece of artwork that translates five intricate pencil drawings into a visually dynamic and eye catching design. These drawings were then digitised and transferred to a two-part anodising process that was able to exactly recreate the image on an aluminium panel as a two-tone pattern that produced a striking contrast between a polish and matt finish. Unlike a paint finish or coating, this extremely complex process actually controls the natural patination of the aluminium and with the introduction of pigments and other elements, allows colours to be created. Essentially, the patterned panels were produced not by painting or apply the designs but by actually changing, texturing and milling the surface of the aluminium to show the artist’s designs.

The challenges in this process were considerable and our supplier (Gilmour Ecometal) in conjunction with their specialist anodiser (United Anodisers) was essentially required to invent each step of the process anew.
