Technical Design

We are very proud of the ‘design led’ approach of our business. With a substantial design office of over 50 staff, McMullen Facades is able to offer the appropriate design development expertise during the pre-tender stage of projects as well as at full design submission stage and post contract award. In line with the government’s BIM strategy, we have completed five projects to BIM Level 2 to date.

The McMullen Technical Design Team is made up of the following group of experts involved at all stages of a project, from estimation and design to the procurement and delivery of the product to site, ensuring a successful project delivered on time and to budget.


Technical Director – overall responsibility for the design office, providing design solutions that meet with the architects aesthetic and performance requirements within the project budget. Managing a team of professional engineers with extensive knowledge and experience in building facade design.

Technical Managers – responsible for the day to day organisation of the team of designers allocated to a specific project. Attends the project design workshops ensuring that the drawings are prepared, issued and returned according to the agreed programme. Responsible for organising all project samples and mock-ups and attaining approval before proceeding.

Structural Engineers – will carry out a full structural analysis of all the components that make up the completed facade. This will include all spanning members (mullions and transoms), connection cleats and fixing brackets back to the main building structure.

Facade Engineers – produce the design drawings including elevations, sections and large scale details. Drawings will be revised and reissued until full approval status is received. Once drawings are approved the Facade Engineer is responsible for producing all bills of material and preparing full fabrication drawings for the workshop.

Thermal Engineering Technician – will carry out a full thermal analysis of the facade to ensure compliance with the project specification. He will also thermally analyse all joints and interfaces within the facade against the risk of condensation.

System Design Engineers – responsible for the research and development of new and innovative building facade systems. He will take ideas from concept and develop them into a working system and oversee the process including prototyping, testing and preparation of full technical manuals and documentation.
